Michelle and Mark, a couple from Blackpool, decided they needed a dental makeover, as the state of their teeth affected their everyday life. Michelle needed dental bridges and dental crowns replacing.

Camilla was trying to get into modelling but her smile lowered her self-confidence and also her chances of receiving serious offers, so she decided to search for a suitable dentist. However the price of the smile makeover hit her hard.

Bone Augmentation

Bone augmentation or a bone graft is normally a dental care procedure offered to dental patients when there is insufficient bone density in the jawbone to receive a dental implant or keep dental implants stable once placed. This procedure is normally carried out by a specialist dentist called an implantologist or oral surgeon.

There are two types of bone augmentation available to dental implant patients with Hungarian Dental Travel:

- Sinus Lift / Augmentation
- Bone Graft / Augmentation

What is a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift is the replacement or augmentation of the bone in the molar region of the upper jaw bone

.Why is a Sinus Lift needed?

The need for a Sinus Lift is pertinent to some patients who require dental implants in the upper molar area of the upper jaw bone. If the upper molars have already been removed it is possible that the Sinus Cavity can drift close to the ridge of the jawbone. Over a period of time, the cavity can drift so far that there is insufficient surface area for the placement of Dental Implants.

The build up of bone which is called a Sinus Lift can rectify this.
Sinus lifts of all types have a high success rate and are commonly used today for promoting dental implant procedures.

What is bone graft / bone augmentation?

Bone grafting is the replacement of the bone which surround the teeth.

Why is a bone graft needed?

Bone grafting is performed by a qualified dental specialist to reverse the bone loss caused by resorption due to missing teeth, periodontal disease, trauma, or ill fitting removable dentures.

When teeth are removed, the jaw bone reduces in size which is a process called resorption.
Sometimes the jaw bone decreases in size to such a degree that the dental implant dentist will not consent to the placement of dental implants due to bone density, bone height, bone width or jawbone surface area insufficiency.

When one loses a tooth, as in an extraction, the surrounding bone collapses. To preserve this bone for future implant placement or for esthetics, a bone graft is used. In certain cases a dental patient has enough bone density to have a dental implant placed but there is insufficient bone to hold it there. This is when a bone graft is done at the same time as implant placement.

The Cost

It is very very difficult to calculate cost before you have your consultation but as a rule of thumb, the price of Bone grafting should be 60% to 80% lower in price than in the UK.
In conjunction with bone grafting, membranes are often used to help stabilise the bone graft as well as displace the gum tissue from invading the healing bone graft. Gum tissue grows at a much faster rate than bone, therefore, membranes are used to prevent gum tissue from growing in and displacing the bone graft before it matures.

There are two potential downsides to bone grafting in conjunction with dental implants. The first is that the process of bone grafting and the ensuing healing period may add significant time to the procedure. The second problem is the increased cost of these procedures.

Prices vary according to the amount of dental treatment required
